Character Assignment Figurative Drawings
Throughout the character assignments in years one and two we have been asked to draw the human anatomy from observation using family, friends and fellow students as subjects. I compiled a range from my drawings showing facial features, poses, full body anatomy and smaller dteails on the body like hands.
Character Assignment Artist Reproduction Jorogumo
I decided to create an A3 reproduction of Samantha Torres piece Jorogumo using a combination of pencil, charcoal and chalk the body of the spider I did in pencil with some of the darker shading done using charcoal
I then created the background by smudging in charcoal starting darker at the bottom then lighter at the top finally I created the web effect using chalk. One thing I noticed straight away was the angle of the body in my interpretation is off and I could've worked in darker on the body to really show off some of the detail on the body more. I think working bigger made it harder for me to keep the exact positioning but overall I am quite pleased with this piece.

Creatures Assignment Manchester Natural History Museum Picture Collection
During our creatures assignment we took a trip to Manchester Natural History Museum to take a collection of photos and draw from observation from their large selection of stuffed birds and insects as well as their Reptile Menagerie.
Character Assignment Artist Reproduction Gordana Curgus
For the character assignment we were asked to reproduce a piece of art from one of our figurative artist research and I choose to do an interpretation of Gordana Curgus's piece Dream. Although she had originally created this piece using acrylic paints I felt more comfortable using watercolors as I could build up the colour slowly however this meant the colour didn't come out as bold as the original piece but I do feel I at least captured the essence of the palette she used. This was by far my most ambitious piece through means of water colour as I have only done small creature studies using this media previously and had mainly done any character art in pencil or fine-liner Overall I am happy with how this piece turned out although my attention to detail on the face and hair could have been better.
Character Assignment Fashion Illustration Task
After collecting a range of images from artists and illustrations that inspire are character design we were asked to create pieces of clothing our character could wear taking inspiration from our images and the past creature assignment. Artists and illustrators I looked at included Arthur Rackham who was the original illustrator for the Peter Pan book and Dan Hillier who combines classic Victorian women with animal like features. I also took inspiration from creatures in mythology like the Jorogumo which in Japanese mythology was a giant spider who could disguise as a seductive woman. I enjoyed this task immensely and concentrated on combining insects with a vintage style as I wanted to reflect both of these in my final character design.
On the far left I took inspiration from a spider and wanted to create an arachnid regal design so I let webs hang from all around it and had her fringe styled so it looked like spider legs with the high bun at the back to represent the body of the spider I also think the frame of a Victorian dress reflected that well too.
The one next to it I took inspiration more from the moths we had looked at in the creatures assignment and tried to the raggedy but defined shapes of a moth while using the antennae to create a headpiece.
The one in the middle I took inspiration from butterflies and I wanted to create a more burlesque style as butterflies are beautiful creatures and I thought reflected as human beings they would be more desirable and wanted to reflect that in the design with flowing cloths and a bustier that kind of reflects the wings of a butterfly
Then next to it I attempted another arachnid design but this time I made the spider legs almost as a reversed dress frame with it being on the outside then having a sleek flowing dress in the center. This didn't reflect the overall regal like quality I desired. It gives a much mysterious appearance .
The last one on at the top right I attempted to take inspiration from dragonflies who have armored bodies which I tried to reflect through the bustier then flowing down is the semi translucent wings which reflect the wings but an opaque underskirt would be worn underneath.

Stop-Motion Animation Research
In preperation for creating our own stop motion animation using a 3d wire and paper mache model we have created we were asked to research some examples of stop motion animation
Although this example of stop-motion doesn't relate to our project about insects it is a good example of how you can create different and creative illusions of motion. This reallly clever stop motion animation mad by Nariomaru which relates to our project has captured the natural insticts of the insects by showing an important part of nature the prey and predator relationship. Even the environment has been specially mafde from fabrics and materials.
